MV Encounter 750 TEU feeder vessel

MV Encounter has been part of the JR Shipping fleet since the summer of 2004. She belongs to the Volharding Shipyards 750 series and was built at the Mangalia Heavy Industries yard in Romania.

With capacity for 750 TEU, Encounter combines container loading flexibility with provision for refrigerated cargo. The vessel is 134.65 metres long, with a 7,200 kW MaK engine and a listed service speed of 17.5 knots.

The retrofit programme addressed the difference between the vessel’s original design speed and her current operating profile. Changes to the bow shape and propeller blades were intended to improve efficiency at lower speeds and varying draughts. The 2026 annual report gives an initial CII score of 18.07 after the retrofit, compared with 25.51 beforehand, an improvement of 29.2%. This result describes the reported observation period and does not establish a fixed emissions reduction for every deployment.

Encounter’s efficiency project forms part of JR Shipping’s continuing work to lower the environmental footprint of container shipping. Another fleet measure concerns daily life at sea: refill stations installed in 2025 supply filtered drinking water for the crew. Refilling bottles helps reduce plastic waste alongside the technical improvements described above.
